The 3-Body Problem: a series adaptation as risky as Game of Thrones?
The long-anticipated launch of the adaptation of “The 3-Body Problem” on Netflix has now given way to questions surrounding its future, raising concerns similar to those experienced by fans of “Game of Thrones”.
Concerns are being raised regarding the finishing of this work of science fiction and the possibility for the creative team to deliver an ending consistent with that envisaged by its author.
Indeed, with names such as David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, previously at work on “Game of Thrones”, at the helm of this new series, parallels are automatically drawn, recalling the challenge they had to face to close the famous franchise due to lack of complete literary support. This precedent therefore raises legitimate questions about the ability of this team to honor the narrative entirety of the “3-Body Problem”.
Fortunately, unlike the “Game of Thrones” saga, “The 3-Body Problem” is based on a trilogy written by Liu Cixin, all of whose volumes have been published. This offers the Netflix production a well-defined framework and allows us to consider an adaptation that respects the original plot.
This literary work, rewarded and celebrated, notably by the Hugo Prize, has already given rise to other adaptations. That of Netflix therefore finds itself responsible for meeting significant expectations from viewers.
The presence of Liu Cixin as consulting producer for the series bodes well for a faithful adaptation. Furthermore, if the audience responds, Netflix will be motivated to extend the series to bring it to fruition, while respecting both the initial story and the fans of the novel.
The series “The 3-Body Problem” is available to Netflix subscribers, who will undoubtedly hold the key to its future through their enthusiasm and support.
