“Les Voleuses”: a daring and scathing film on Netflix

The new movie “The Thieves”, directed by Mélanie Laurent, arrives on Netflix with a choice cast. Adèle Exarchopoulos, Carole Odalys and Sam form an endearing and explosive trio. A look back at this work with its many twists and turns which promises to delight the streaming giant’s subscribers.

A thrilling storyline adapted from a comic book

Based on a successful comic book, “Les Voleuses” features a duo of badass and free as air thieves. Carole and Alex want to hang up, but their desire comes up against Godmother, the ruthless boss in their community. The deal imposed under threat is as follows: to carry out a final burglary, that of the Ingres painting, “La Grande Odalisque”. To carry out this perilous mission, they will be supported by a novice, Sam, queen of the road.

Convincing and complicit actresses

To carry out this ambitious project, Mélanie Laurent called on known and talented actresses. Adele Exarchopoulos brilliantly embodies Alex, while Carole Odalys interprets Carole. The complicity between the two women is palpable on screen and adds an authentic dimension to the story.

As Sam, newcomer to the cinema scene, brings freshness and energy. Finally, Godmother is mischievously played by an essential French actress whose identity you will discover while watching the film.

Mix of action, humor and feminism

“Les Voleuses” stands out for its mix of genres: action, humor and feminist commitment come together in an explosive cocktail. If the action scenes are successful, it is above all the crafted dialogues and the funny situations that hit the mark with the public. The feminist message, for its part, is conveyed subtly and allows us to question the place of women in an unrepresentative environment.

Well-thought-out cultural references

  • Music occupies a preponderant place in “Les Voleuses”, notably thanks to the evocation of a French superstar.
  • Numerous nods to the seventh art also punctuate the feature film, proof that the director is a true film buff.

A careful creation by Mélanie Laurent

For her first time behind the camera, Mélanie Laurent hits hard. His directing work is remarkable and gives a real identity to “Les Voleuses”. We feel the complicity between the actresses, which she was able to establish from the start of filming. She also manages to deliver a committed message without sacrificing the intrigue and rhythm of her film.

Mixed reactions in Switzerland

If “Les Voleuses” seems to have won over the general public, the same is not true for the Swiss who denounce some clichés and geographical errors in the film. Indeed, certain scenes take place around Lake Geneva and it seems that certain elements do not entirely conform to local reality.

Hollywood has not yet finished showing all the colors to our Swiss neighbors!

In short, despite some minor flaws, “Les Voleuses” is a real success, both in terms of staging, casting and even story. With this skillfully orchestrated work, Mélanie Laurent has created a daring film that will undoubtedly capture the hearts of Netflix subscribers.
