‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ series light up the 2023 Emmy Awards

The annual meeting of American television took place with splendor and the public’s projections were respected: the series “Succession” and “The Bear” hardly surprised by winning distinguished awards at this ceremony which was held with a delay of four months due to work interruptions in Hollywood last year.

Racking up honors at the celebration held in Los Angeles on January 16, “Succession” picked up its third trophy as best drama series, a confirmation of its preeminence since its victories in 2020 and 2022. The show took home a total of six prizes that evening, giving an unstoppable performance for his last lap.

Regarding individual distinctions, they were largely captured by the actors in the series. Kieran Culkin won best actor, Sarah Snook was crowned best actress, and Matthew Macfadyen took home an award for his supporting male role.

‘Succession’, a mirror of media power

A dark production with noir tones from HBO, “Succession” depicts the internal family disagreements of the Roys, an influential family governing a substantial media empire. This fictional representation finds certain echoes in reality, notably with the media empire built by Rupert Murdoch in the USA.

The close link between fictional content and American political and media realities was highlighted by screenwriter Jesse Armstrong during the awards ceremony, recalling the convergence between partisan journalism and divisive right-wing politics.

Revelations and confirmation for ‘The Bear’

For its part, “The Bear” proved that it was the new thing not to be missed on the American small screen, also gleaning six awards. Its first season offers a dive into the tumultuous environment of a Chicago restaurant, a performance concluded with the awarding of the award for best comedy and those awarded to outstanding directing and writing.

In the awards for comedy artists, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach collected the majority of acting awards.

“Abbott Elementary” stood out as the only series to offer significant resistance to these favorites, with Quinta Brunson winning best actress in a comedy, in her satirical depiction of an underfunded elementary school.
